Slidell Seven Months Later

All of the following pictures where taken last week in Slidell. Most of them were along the water in the hardest hit area. I wanted to show you how bad it actually was and still is. One has to wonder how long things will stay this way, and will it ever be 'cleaned up'. Needless to say, we got really lucky. The main road in which our sub is off, flooded just a mile down the road and these people lost everything. It's amazing what mother nature can do, and not do. Just to think that the force of water alone, in some of these pictures, is what caused the destruction! And then you have the brave souls who are not afraid to rebuild- right on the water. Their willpower is inspiring (and a bit scary). I hope this gives you an insiders view of our little town.

One of our favorite places to go was the Old Towne Slidell Soda Shop. It was old fashion inside and they served grilled cheese, hot dogs, all the old favorites- along with ice cream in the old tin dishes. They had a little arcade in the back for the kids too. It was a great place, but it flooded terribly and they lost everything. At least they could have a little fun with it by drawing the water level on the side of the building:) Posted by Picasa

This is a place in Old Towne Slidell, about five miles from the water, and it flooded that high! Everything was put out of business. Posted by Picasa

These are huge billboards along the highway completely snapped by the wind. And they are about 2 1/2 feet in diameter steel. Posted by Picasa

I can't believe this one is still up there and hasn't slid off yet. The sad thing is that the valuables inside may have made it through the storm, but they can't go in there and get anything out! Posted by Picasa

A random boat that made it about two miles inland. Posted by Picasa

This poor house sits on the canal and is full of other people's debris- their actual house didn't appear to have much damage. Posted by Picasa

Here a crane is in a canal that separates the water front homes from another subdivision and he has pulled out someones houseboat from the canal. Posted by Picasa

This is another spot on the water where someone is breaking groud to rebuild. Posted by Picasa

There was a house built way high on this foundation, at one time. Now they've snuck the fema trailer right in there. Posted by Picasa

This amazing house stands directly over the water raised about 20 feet. Miraculously, it weathered the storm only losing some siding and the main steps that lead to the front door. Now how does that happen? Posted by Picasa

This one slid off the foundation and then the roof was caught by a single tree branch. Posted by Picasa

This one slid off it's raised foundation. Posted by Picasa

This is a spot where a huge waterfront home once stood, now it's leveled and behind it you can see some of the luckier ones. Posted by Picasa
