What is a blog?

Hey everybody,
This is my first entry on our blog, so deal with it. I don't know what more to say, my wife has said it all.......you could say she has hogged the blog. As you all know we have had some busy months, but we are hoping to finally ease into this pregnancy. I have recently inquired about what I will be doing as soon as the baby is born and it looks like I will once again be getting my leadership position back. You see I had my own boat come February, but our placenta sank my ship. As for right now I am stuck behind a desk doing desk stuff. My worst nightmare. I look forward to shooting my GAU mini gun again someday(breathing in gun powder keeps me regular). Well thats about it, I don't have any crazy blog stories to tell like Angies' husband and my good friend Ryan. I guess he is going to strap on his thong bikini and cut down the dead tree in his front yard. Sounds exhilerating doesn't it. Hope to see everyone soon.

Recap of March and April

As you may well know, we are now 21 weeks pregnant with our second child. We recently found out that it is a BOY!!! And he has been nothing but a labor of love. It took us six months of trying to finally conceive this little miracle baby, but we did, and found out in early January that we were expecting. Everything was going just fine and normal, as it did with Olivia.

Then at the thirteenth week (March 3rd) we were blindsided by bleeding that sent us straight to the ER. Thank heaven for my friend Angie, who took Olivia in for over eight hours that night. She has two little girls, one four and a half and another just two months older than Olivia. So you can just imagine the fun that Olivia has with them. We are so greatful to have found good friends down here! And now, whenever we are together Olivia goes to Angie as if she were her other mommy...it's adorable.

We spent the four hours in the waiting room- crying and praying for our little baby. Then we finally got a 'room' at the toughest hotel in town! When we went in for the ultrasound the tech had no idea that all we wanted to know was, "is there still a heartbeat?" She danced around doing her own thing and finally after five minutes of white knuckled horror we saw that our little baby was indeed alive. This would have to be one of the scariest days of our lives!
The next morning we were sent to our OB who placed me on strict bedrest. Oh Joy! was all I could think...this oughta be a great time, I'm going to go crazy.

That very weekend my mom flew down on a last minute flight to stay with us for two weeks and help with Olivia. We are very lucky to have such helpful and supportive family members. Of course Olivia took to her grandmas instantly and adapted just fine to her changing life. Imagine being with your mother every day of your life and then suddenly having her tell you that she can't pick you up or go anywhere with you anymore. Ugh, I think it hurt my feelings more than hers.

So Jeff's mom, Paulla, and my mom switched every two weeks and lived with us to keep the house running. We all had our ups and our downs, but it worked out in the end. And our efforts must have paid off, because after six weeks my 'sub-chorionic bleed' was all healed up and I was taken off bedrest.

We were sent to a specialist in New Orleans to have a level two ultrasound done due to a suspictious mass in the baby's abdomen. (April 11th). Much to our surprise (and my terror) we had to have an amniocentesis right then and there in the doctor's office. Eeeek, how scary! But it turned out to be not as bad as it sounds, really. This specialist gave us terrible news, the baby has "echogenic bowels." What's this? Well it's basically hardening or blockage of the bowels. And it just so happens it's a marker for Down Syndrome, Cystic Fibrosis, and a virus called CMV. Our tests were rushed off to a lab in New Mexico where they promised fast results. The next few weeks were so stressful and full of the unknown, it's a wonder our mother's stayed at our house. We were quite the bear to live with, but of course they were nice and didn't say a thing.

We had a horrible nurse to deal with at the specialist's office. Apparently, she's the only one that can receive and read the amnio results when they come in. And she's hardly ever there and when she is, she doesn't return your calls! We were given the run around day after day. Finally we left a message for the doctor (a pretty heated one at that!) and he called us back within five minutes. Don't mess with a prego momma who's baby's life is on the line!!!! Anyway, the doctor was wonderful. All of the results came back normal. No chromosomal abnormalities, no sicknesses, nothing but a possible backed up bowel. WHEEEEEEEEW!!!!!!

Jeff and I were so filled with joy. After waiting two weeks for the results on our little boy, we finally had good news and could finally relax. The specialist told us that they will be monitoring me with close ultrasounds and measuring the baby to see if his condition changes. There is a good chance that it could just simply 'go away' by the time he's born. And if not, then he'll get a full abdominal ultrasound right after birth and possibly go for surgery the day after he's born. Now we are filled with hope and thankful that he has a shot at life!

We are so excited to start planning his new room and everything that goes along with our growing family:) Thank you to everyone who prayed for us and sent well wishes our way. We thrived on your support and were hopeful because of the love you shared with us, THANK YOU!

Well that's all for now, I think. I look forward to continuing our story on further posts...wish us luck!

The First Log

Well, here we go...my first log in the blog (haha). I was introduced to this by my friend, Angie, so thank you Angie. I hope everyone enjoys this log and is able to keep up with the Carter Family more regularly. I aspire to write in here a few times a week and posts pictures too. (We'll see how that goes!). I keep a tiny journal for Olivia right now, but just a few words on a calendar of her achievements. So hopefully she (and you) can use this to track our family's growth. But for now, there is so much to catch up on. So I'll just type away, and allow everyone to refresh their brains as to the life of the Carter Family.

Love Tricia
